For some people, getting out of their country and staying out is a matter of life or death.
The good news is that the US immigration laws offer protection through asylum. If you are granted asylum, you will be permitted to stay and work in the United States until it is safe for you to go back home. If after one (1) year it is still dangerous for you to return, you can apply for a US green card and obtain permanent residence. You do not need a financial sponsor to qualify for asylum, and there is no annual limit to the number of people granted asylum each year.
How do you qualify for asylum? You must have experienced persecution in your native country or have good reason to fear persecution if you return to your country. Persecution typically means there is a serious threat to your life or freedom which occurred because of your race, religion, nationality, political opinion, or social group. Also, the threat of persecution must be unavoidable no matter what part of your home country you go to. Economic suffering alone is not enough to qualify for asylum. Also, being a victim of a random act of violence will likely not suffice to qualify for asylum.
